
Beloit bites Kernels with another one-run loss, 6-5

BELOIT- Wis. - The Kernels dropped their 6th game in a row on Monday night, 6-5, to the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field. It was the team's 5th loss in a row by a one run deficit. A RBI double by Jhon Goncalves in the 8th inning broke a 5-5 tie and gave the Snappers a one run advantage, marking the second straight game where Beloit tallied the go-ahead run in their final at-bat.
Trailing 1-0 in the 4th inning, the Kernels scored all 5 runs in the inning as Beloit committed three errors. Andy Workman singled to lead off the inning, and Zach Wright reached on a fielding error by Snappers third baseman Miguel Sano. Matt Scioscia's RBI single plated Workman. Chevy Clarke reached on an error by shortstop Tyler Grimes that allowed Wright to score. Eric Stamets then walked to load the bases. Kevin Moesquit's lined a 2-RBI double into the corner in left, scoring Scioscia and Clarke easily. Sano booted the throw back into third base, which allowed Stamets to score and give the Kernels a 5-1 lead.
The Snappers started to peck away with a 3-run 5th inning, cutting the Kernels lead to 5-4. Jhon Goncalves led off the inning with a triple and then came home on a RBI groundout by Adam Bryant. Matt Koch and Tyler Grimes then followed with a single and double, respectively. A sacrifice fly to left by J.D. Williams scored Koch, and a RBI single by A.J. Pettersen plated Grimes.
Beloit added a run in the 6th inning to tie the game 5-5. Drew Leachman walked to lead off the inning and reached 2nd base on a single by Steven Liddle. Leachman then stole 3rd base and came home to score on a wild pitch by Kernels reliever Shane Riedie.
In the 8th inning the Snappers added the game's final run to take a 6-5 lead. Steven Liddle doubled with two outs and then scored on the RBI double down the left field line by Jhon Goncalves.
Kernels reliever Logan Odom (0-4) took the loss, pitching two innings and allowing one run on two hits. Aaron Meade started for Cedar Rapids and went four innings. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out one and walking one. Joe Melioris allowed three runs and four hits over one inning of work. Shane Riedie allowed one run on two hits over one inning while striking out one and walking one.
Ryan O'Rourke (2-3) picked up the win in relief for Beloit, going three innings. He allowed no runs on two hits while striking out three and walking one. David Hurlbut started for the Snappers and allowed five unearned runs over five innings. He struck out five and walked three. Corey Williams pitched the 9th inning for his 12th save, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out two.
