Dragons Fall 20-10 in Slugfest at Bowling Green

Bowling Green, Ky.-In a game played in triple-digit temperatures featuring 30 runs and 30 hits, the Bowling Green Hot Rods belted two grand slam home runs on the way to a 20-10 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Sunday evening. The Dragons fell to 2-8 in the second half with the loss.

Bowling Green, with the Midwest League's top offense, collected 18 hits and scored at least five runs in three different innings. Alejandro Segovia belted a grand slam home run in the first inning and after the Dragons had battled back to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth, the Hot Rods came to life at the plate again. They scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, five in the sixth, and seven in the seventh, keyed by Jeff Malm's grand slam, to build their lead to 19-7 through seven innings.

Dragons starting pitcher Stalin Gerson (3-6) tossed the first five innings. He allowed seven hits and seven runs while walking two and striking out six to suffer the loss. It was an especially tough night for the Dragons bullpen, which combined to allow 13 runs in three innings of work. Lucas O'Rear pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed five runs (one earned) on three hits with two walks. Cole Green, who had been unscored upon for the entire month of June prior to his final inning of the month, struggled for the second straight outing. He worked one and one-third innings, allowing six hits and seven runs. Carlos Gonzalez pitched an inning and allowed one run.

As temperatures hovered at 104 degrees, the Dragons had a strong offensive game despite the large margin of defeat. They collected 12 hits, including three each by Juan Perez, Joe Terry, and Ryan Wright. Perez hit a home run in the top of the first inning, his fourth of the year and second in the last two nights. He also added a single and triple and drove in three runs. Terry scored three runs and drove in two, also adding a stolen base. Wright had two doubles and drove in three runs as he extended his hitting streak to nine straight games. The Dragons collected seven extra base hits, just one short of their season high.

Todd Glaesmann went 4 for 4, scored four runs, and drove in four for Bowling Green. Ryan Brett also collected four hits.

The Dragons battle the Hot Rods on Monday at 8:05 p.m. (EDT) in the second game of a three-game series. Jacob Johnson (0-1, 3.60) will start for Dayton against Bowling Green's Ryan Carpenter (7-4, 4.01). The next home game is Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. against South Bend at Fifth Third Field.

Notes: The Hot Rods finished one run short of the Dragons franchise record for most runs by an opponent (21 by West Michigan in 2010)...The Dragons have scored at least nine runs in three of their last five games, winning two of the five...Wright is 16 for 34, .471, over his nine game hitting streak...Perez is batting .417 over his last 15 games, raising his average from .211 to .257. He has five extra base hits in his last two games including two homers, two doubles, and a triple.
