Gulls Edge Mainers in Offensive ShowdownJune 29, 2012 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Sanford Mainers
The Mainers dropped their fourth straight in a high scoring match-up 12-10 at Cardines Field in Newport, Rhode Island.
In the second inning, the Mainers started off the game scoring one when Mark Weist crossed the plate on an RBI ground out by Brett Armour.
Entering into the bottom half of the second, the Gulls tacked up six runs on five hits.
Newport tied the game on an RBI double by Conor Keniry, but things got quickly out of hand for Mainers starting pitcher, Tripp Davis.
John Norwood smacked a triple to right scoring Keniry, and soon followed him when Kasey Coffman hit a sacrifice fly to left.
With the score at 4-1 in the Gulls favor, Alex DeLeon hit a two-run home run to left, putting his team up by five.
The Mainers answered in the top half of the third, when Jordan Hagel hit his first home run of the year; a three-run shot.
Sanford grabbed one more when Anthony Hajjar hit an RBI single, scoring Jordan Betts after he hit a double to right-center.
A whole new ballgame had been brought upon the two teams, but Newport would once again put the game back in their favor. In the bottom of the fourth, the Gulls extended the score to 9-5, including Alex DeLeon's second two-run home run of the game.
However the Mainers continued to fight. In the top of the fifth, Betts hit his fifth home run of the year to make the score 9-6.
After singles hit by Hajjar and Paul Kronenfeld, Armour collected his second RBI of the game, hitting a single to left field scoring Hajjar.
The Gulls scored one more in the bottom half of the fifth and two more in sixth when Austin Slater joined in on the home run parade with a two-run home run, putting the score at 12-7.
After two scoreless innings, the Mainers pulled the game closer, scoring three in the eighth.
Armour struggled for the beginning of the season, but lead off the inning with a towering solo-shot to left.
With the score standing at 12-8 in the hands of the Gulls, Betts hit his second double of the night scoring Troy Black and Brian Doran who reached on walks earlier in the inning.
Jose Torralba lead off the top of the ninth by getting hit by a pitch, but he would be left stranded ending the team's chances of coming back.
The two teams combined for 6 home runs, 22 runs, and 25 hits in tonight's game.
The Mainers will be on the road again tomorrow to face the New Bedford Bay Sox. Jason Inghram will be making his fourth start of the season, second against the Bay Sox. Game time slated for 6:30pm.
