Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, RI - The Newport Gulls exploded for six runs in the second inning, capped off by a three-run homer by Alex DeLeon and never looked back, as the Gulls defeated the Sanford Mainers 12-10 at Cardines Field on Friday, June 29.

DeLeon, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, homered twice in his final home game of the season. After hitting four home runs over the past month, DeLeon is scheduled to leave the Gulls and return to Kansas on Sunday. DeLeon's homer in the second inning put Newport ahead 6-1 and his second home run in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Gulls an 8-5 lead.

"I have to go back to school this Sunday, but I've had a great time here in Newport," said DeLeon. "I've made a lot of friends, my host family has been great, and our team has been swinging the bat pretty well. I'm not looking forward to leaving, but I have to."

Newport hit three home runs as a team in the win, the final home run coming off the bat of third baseman Austin Slater, his first of the season. Slater finished the night 3-for-4 with three RBI.

With the victory, Newport remains in a first place tie with the New Bedford Bay Sox in the Eastern Division as they improve to 10-4 overall this season, while Sanford falls 4-11 on the season with the loss.

Newport reliever Ryan Halstead earned the win, improving to 1-1 on the season, tossing four innings in relief of starter Brett Graves who was chased from the contest after two innings in which he allowed five runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Halstead gave up two runs on five hits, with two strikeouts and a pair of walks over four innings of work. Reliever Peter Kelich pitched three innings, allowing three runs on two hits, with a pair of walks and strikeouts.

Caleb Kellogg worked a scoreless ninth inning in his Newport Gulls debut, earning his first save of the season.

Sanford starter Tripp Davis lasted just three innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits, with four strikeouts and five walks and took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the season.

Newport will be back in action on Saturday, July 30 taking on the Laconia Muskrats on the road, before retuning home to Cardines Field to square off with the New Bedford Bay Sox on Monday, July 2.
