Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, Vt. - New Bedford starter Brian Derner pitched seven shutout innings giving up one hit while the offense scored eight runs as the Bay Sox defeated the Vermont Mountaineers 8-1 at Montpelier Recreation Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Friday. The loss snapped a Vermont (8-9) two game winning streak and dropped the team below .500 on the year.
What began as a pitchers duel with neither team registering a hit through the first two innings, quickly turned as New Bedford (12-6) put runners on second and third with nobody out in the top of the third. Evan King then grounded out to second plating the first run of the game before Zach Stone's sacrifice fly to center made it 2-0. Alex Black then hit an infield single to third before advancing to second a throwing error from Casey Brighton (Hyde Park, Vt./SUNY-Plattsburgh). He would then score on Alex Baldock's RBI double.
While the offense took control, Derner was dominant on the hill. Through his seven innings he only allowed four baserunners on one hit, two walks and an error. Vermont seemed to make a charge in the bottom of the third as they put the first two runners on with nobody out. However, Derner recorded consecutive strikeouts and Cole Peragine was thrown out trying to steal third to end the inning.
The Bay Sox added another run in the fifth when Black smashed a solo homerun to deep left center to make it a 4-0 New Bedford advantage. Mountaineers starter Brad Schnelle (Moon Township, Pa./Seton Hill) struggled with consistency as he pitched five innings giving up four runs, three earned, while walking one and striking out two. In the sixth, Richie Ochoa began his relief appearance and recorded the first two outs before giving up four straight hits and a walk to allow three more runs to score. Jacob Kremers would replace Ochoa (Friday Harbour, Wash./Washington State) and strike out Alex Baldock to end the inning with the Bay Sox up 7-0.
Kremers (Broken Arrow, Okla./Harvard) proceeded to walk the first two batters of the seventh before leaving with injury. Submariner Tyler Rogers the came on and gave up an RBI single to Peyton Hart before finishing the frame.
In the bottom of the eight, Peragine (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stony Brook) worked a leadoff walk off relief pitcher Junior Mendez before Chris Cook (Annapolis, Md./George Mason) was hit by a pitch. Brighton then grounded into a fielders choice to put runners on the corners and one out. Rightfielder Brian O'Grady (Warminster, Pa./Rutgers) hit a lazer off the glove of first baseman that trickled into left scoring Peragine but Brighton was forced out at second leaving the score 8-1 New Bedford.
Vermont would put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the ninth but Ryan Karl (Towaco, N.J./Louisville) grounded into a double play to end the game. Schnelle (1-2) got the loss giving up six hits through five innings while Berner (1-0) picked up the win throwing just 84 pitches in seven shutout innings.
The Mountaineers conclude their four game home stand on Saturday June 30, when they host the Holyoke Blue Sox at Montpelier Recreation Field. All the game action can be heard live on ESPN 1240, WSKI and online at www.thevermontmountaineers.com.
