Cardinals Fall to Tulsa 6-4
June 7, 2012 - Texas League (TL) Springfield Cardinals
Tulsa, OK - A game over .500 for the first time since the 15th game of the season, the Springfield Cardinals looked to gain more ground against the North Division leading Tulsa Drillers Thursday night at ONEOK Field.Seth Maness made the start for the Cardinals who had allowed just two earned runs in his three starts for Springfield against lefty, and former Arkansas Razorback, Nick Schmidt.
The Cardinals wasted no time against Schmidt in the top of the first inning as Kolten Wong walked, Jermaine Curtis singled and Oscar Taveras was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. Kyle Conley stepped to the plate and lined a double down the left field line scoring all three runners to put Springfield in front 3-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Driller took advantage of a Cardinals error to plate their first run. After a one-out walk and a single, Nick Schmidt laid down a bunt. Xavier Scruggs picked the ball up and fired it wide of third down the left field line allowing a run to score. Seth Maness would strike out the next batter and got a ground out to end the inning with Springfield still in front, 3-1.
Springfield tacked on another run in the 4th as Jake Shaffer blasted a solo homer to center field, his 4th of the year, to grab a 4-1 lead.
The Drillers responded in the bottom of the 4th as they would tie the game. After a lead-off single, Josh Rutledge tripled into left center to make it 4-2. Angelys Nina followed with an RBI single to bring the Drillers within one. After a double by Nolan Arenado, Ben Paulsen bounced to shortstop to bring home the tying run, 4-4. Maness would exit the game after the fourth allowing four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.
Chris Corrigan came in out of the Springfield bullpen in the 5th and immediately got into trouble walking the lead-off man and allowing back to back singles to load the bases. After two strikeouts, Corrigan allowed a two-run double to Angelys Nina to give Tulsa their first lead, 6-4.
The Cardinals threatened in the 7th getting a lead-off single and a double to put the tying run at second base with no one out, but the 3-4-5 hitters popped out twice and grounded out to end the inning. Springfield never threatened again as they dropped the second game of the series, 6-4.
The Redbirds will continue their four-game series in Tulsa against the Drillers Friday night at 7:05pm. Springfield will send Trevor Rosenthal to the mound against Joe Gardner of the Drillers.
Springfield will return home Sunday the 10th for an eight-game homestand against their division rival Arkansas Travelers and NW Arkansas Naturals. Every Sunday is a Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sunday where all kids receive an ice cream treat on the Prime Patio prior to the game. Kids also can run the bases just like the Cardinals after the game!
