Birds Suffer Largest Defeat in 12-4 Tangle with SalemJune 1, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL) Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The game started innocently enough, with Odubel Herrera extending his team record hitting streak to 22 games with a leadoff infield single. He scored two batters later on an infield single from Jared Hoying. It was 1-0 Myrtle Beach.
Salem then responded, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning for an early 3-1 lead. It was short lived, however, with the Pelicans rebounding for three runs of their own in the top of the third. The Pelicans sent eight batters to the plate in the third, highlights by an RBI single and an RBI double from Hoying and Brett Nicholas. The double nearly cleared the 20 foot tall wall in centerfield, instead caroming down to centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. Myrtle Beach had the lead back at 4-3.
That lead too, however, was not long for the game. Neither was either team's manager. Both Billy McMillan and Jason Wood were ejected in the second and third respectively for arguing a caught stealing call at second base. Salem would respond, using a Brandon Jacobs homer in the third to knot the score at four.
It was at that point that things took a turn for the worse. In the fourth inning Salem hung a five spot on the Pelicans. The Red Sox batted around, using three doubles off reliever Francisco Mendoza to scorch the earth. Mendoza finished the inning but did not the sixth, surrendering five earned runs in an inning and a third. Starter Wilmer Font issued four runs in three frames.
Kyle DeVore did an excellent job halting the bloodletting out of the bullpen for the Pelicans. DeVore entered in the sixth, going three innings and allowing three unearned runs, two of which were allowed by Jose Monegro as inherited runners after DeVore tired in the eighth.
The win goes to Miguel Celestino. Salem's starter went six innings, allowing only two earned runs. Michael Gleason went three to earn his first save of the season in his Red Sox debut. The loss is the worst for Myrtle Beach this year, topping a five run loss to Salem on May 12th.
Both teams get back together for two Saturday at 6:05. Cody Buckel and Randol Rojas are scheduled to pitch for the Pelicans. Radio coverage begins on FOX Sports 1050AM and 101.9FM at 5:50. For more information head online to MytleBeachPelicans.com.
