LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (28-23) @ POTOMAC NATIONALS (21-29)
June 1st, 2012 -- 7:05 PM
Pfitzner Stadium
LHP Dimasther Delgado (3-1, 3.55) vs RHP Adam Olbrychowski (1-4, 6.62)
THE HILLCATS: Last night, the Hillcats lost to the the Salem Red Sox 6-2 ..The Red Sox scored early with one run in the first and then took a 6-0 lead with a a five-run third inning...The Hillcats were held scoreless through six innings by the Salem starter Brandon Workman...The shutout was broken by DH Adam Milligan in the seventh inning with a solo shot...The 'Cats added another run in the eighth inning but fell for the third straight game...The Hillcats are now 28-23 and remain in first place in the Northern Division...
VS. POTOMAC: The Hillcats lead the season series 7-2 over the Nationals...They swept the Nationals opening weekend April 4-6 and then took two of three in Potomac April 13-15...Most recently the two teams met in Lynchburg again last weekend when the 'Cats won the series 2-1...The Hillcats lead the All-Time series at 178-169...Last year, Lynchburg lost the season series 9-11...
LOSING STREAKS: Lynchburg has lost its last three games in a row...All three coming at home against the Salem Red Sox...The 'Cats have been outscored 19-6 over their last three contests...It's their third slide of three games or more this season...All three have started at home...They lost three in a row at home 5/2-5/4 (two against Carolina and the third against Myrtle Beach), and they lost four in a row 5/16-5/19 with the first two at home against Wilmington before two on the road against Winston-Salem...
TRENDING NOW: The Hillcats have struck out 34 times at the plate over their last three games...Two of those games were seven-inning contests, so they were fanned 34 times in just 23 innings (1.48 K per Inning), or 11.33 strikeouts per game...This is the same team that had just 334 whiffs in their first 48 affairs, averaging 6.96 per game...They have now struck out 368 times through their first 51 games which is third-fewest in the circuit...
I DIDN'T SEE ANY TENTS: A very odd play ensued last night at City Stadium, which resulted in a run for the Hillcats and two stolen bases for OF Mycal Jones...Jones was at second base and 2B Tommy La Stella was at first base with two outs...La Stella attempted to steal on the pitch, but Jones stood still...Salem's catcher ran out towards second to trap the two runners, and caught Jones in a rundown while La Stella retreated to first...The ball went to the shortstop and then the third baseman before a missed tag allowed Jones to reach third safely...Then, since the catcher had ran out to second base, no one was covering home, so Jones sprinted across the plate...Practically forced to steal two bases on the same play...
EVERYTHING THE LIGHT TOUCHES: SS Andrelton "Simba" Simmons was called up to Atlanta from Double-A Mississippi late Wednesday night...The phenom shortstop nearly earned the starting job for Atlanta to begin the season but a side strain held him back towards the end of Spring Training...Simmons hit .311 as a Hillcat in 2011 and won the Carolina League batting title...Lynchburg honored him as their Co-MVP and the Braves named him the Organizational Player of the Year for Lynchburg...With Mississippi this season, he hit .292 with nine doubles, two triples, and three home runs, while driving in 21 through 43 games...Simmons will make his Major League Debut tonight at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. for Atlanta...He is just the 12th player ever to get promoted straight from Mississippi to Atlanta...
UNCHARTED TERRITORY: LHP Dimasther Delgado pitched a season high seven innings in his last start...It was the first time Delgado had finished seven innings since August 31, 2009...He never went more than six innings with Lynchuburg in 2011 through 23 games, 17 starts...He missed all of 2010 with a number of injuries resulting from a car accident...He also did not strike any out yesterday...It marked the first time he was unable to fan a batter in a start in his career...It was his 55th start as a professional...It was just the second time he didn't strike out a batter in any appearance... The only other time it happened was a one inning appearance July 25, 2011 on the road in Myrtle Beach...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Adam Olbrychowski was selected in the fifth round of the 2007 draft by the Yankees out of Pepperdine...Began his career as a starter, but was converted to a reliever going into the 2009 season...Made it as high as Double-A with the Yankees...Traded to the Nationals for outfielder Justin Maxwell in February, 2011...Went 5-7 with a 4.16 ERA in 31 appearances, 15 starts last season with Potomac...2-1 with a 3.63 ERA in five appearances, three starts against the Hillcats...First two starts this season against Lynchburg...Took the loss in both games...Gave up eight runs on 13 hits and five walks, while striking out five in 10.1 innings...Gave up just one run in four innings last time against the Hillcast and took a no-decision...Currently 1-4 with a 6.62 ERA through eight appearances, seven starts...
