York Revolution News Release
Bobby Kielty cracked his first home run for the York Revolution breaking a tie score in the bottom of the eighth, and R.J. Rodriguez tied the club's all-time record with his 23rd save as the Revs beat the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs as well as a fast-approaching storm, winning 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Sovereign Bank Stadium. The Revs take three of four from the Blue Crabs in the weekend series, and will begin an eight-game road trip on Monday evening in Bridgeport.
The Revs led 2-0 into the top of the eighth inning thanks to a two-run homer by Andres Perez on a line drive to left in the bottom of the third inning.
Revs pitchers made the lead stand up until Jeremy Owens blasted a game-tying two-run homer to straightaway center in the eighth.
Kielty hammered the tie-breaking home run, a line drive to right-center with two outs in the eighth, off reliever Eduardo Morlan, who had previously not allowed a run in 16.1 innings all season.
As was the theme for Revs pitchers throughout the game, Rodriguez worked out of a jam in the ninth to nail down the save. After walking leadoff hitter Paco Figueroa, he quickly bounced back to induce a double play clearing the bases. But after coming within one strike of ending the game twice, allowing a walk to Richard Mercado and a single to Matt Padgett, Rodriguez finally retired David Espinosa on a groundout to first, just minutes before the skies opened at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
The Blue Crabs stranded 13 base runners in the game, including 10 in the first five innings.
Revs starter Jesus Sanchez tossed a season-high 4.1 innings in his third start of the year, dancing around seven singles and two walks to keep the Crabs off the board.
Reliever Adam Thomas (1-1) earned the win, retiring the final two batters in the eighth after Owens' game-tying homer. Morlan (1-1) took the loss for Southern Maryland.
Rodriguez' save was his fifth of the year, tying him for the third most in the league.
Blue Crabs starter Matthew Vasquez did not factor in a decision, allowing only the two runs on Perez' homer through his six innings of work. The Revs did collect nine hits off the right-hander, but he also worked out of jams on multiple occasions.
Notes: The win is the 199th for the Revs in the history of Sovereign Bank Stadium. York finishes its six-game homestand with a 3-3 record after losing the first two games. Rodriguez ties Franklin Nunez' club record with 23 saves, as he is now 23-for-27 in save opportunities in his time with York. Revs pitchers allowed just two runs for the third consecutive game, posting a 1.67 ERA on that stretch. They've also now worked a 3.03 ERA over the last eight games, while starters now hold a 2.37 ERA on that stretch. The Revs open their road trip in Bridgeport on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. as righty Shawn Hill (0-0, 12.00) makes his second start for York, after going four scoreless innings in his first starting assignment. Bridgeport will counter with right-hander Tobi Stoner (1-3, 6.62). Fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350 and Shoutcast.com (YorkRevs) beginning at 6:30 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
