Round Rock Express News Release
Nashville, Tenn. - E-Train bats exploded to set franchise highs in hits and runs scored as the Express pounded the Nashville Sounds 19-1 in Sunday afternoon's Pacific Coast League action at Herschel Greer Stadium. Round Rock (22-29) scored at least four runs in three separate innings. Nashville's (20-29) offense managed just nine hits on the day.
Already leading 8-1, the Express put up nine runs in the top of the eighth inning. It started with a three-run bomb to left field by Mike BIanucci. Four batters later, Luis Martinez came home on a one-out throwing error by Sounds first baseman Sean Halton. Ryan Spilborghs, Brad Nelson, Joey Butler and Matt Kata followed with four consecutive singled to drive in three runs. Bianucci then walked to force in a run and Martinez picked up a sacrifice fly to drive in Butler. Sounds reliever Johnnie Lowe got Tommy Mendonca to pop out in four territory to end the inning.
Round Rock got the scoring started in the first inning as Nelson slapped a one-out single to right field with the bases loaded to drive in a pair. Butler followed with an RBI single to score Spilborghs. Kata then singled to load the bases again. Bianucci grounded into a fielder's choice to score Nelson to make it 4-0 before Martinez grounded out to end the inning.
The E-Train kept rolling in the second with another four-run frame. Julio Borbon led off with a single to extend his hitting streak to 15 games but was promptly removed for pinch runner Mendonca. Sounds starter Wily Peralta retired Hernandez on a strikeout and got Yangervis Solarte to groundout before Spilborghs drew a walk. Then with two on and two out, Nelson struck a towering three-run home run to right field and Butler followed with a solo shot to give the Express an 8-0 lead. Kata and Bianucci smacked back-to-back singles to chase Peralta from the game before Donovan Hand finally got Martinez to fly out to end the inning.
Round Rock added runs in the third and fifth innings on RBI singles from Spilborghs and Hernandez respectively. Nashville chased home a run on an Andy Gonzalez sacrifice fly to score Logan Schafer. They added two more in the ninth off Express closer Tanner Scheppers.
Michael Kirkman (4-1) picked up the win for the Express. He threw six innings and allowed one run on three hits and three walks and struck out six.
Peralta (1-6) suffered the loss for the Sounds. He lasted just one and two-thirds innings and allowed eight runs on nine hits and a walk and he struck out one.
Round Rock concludes its four-game series Monday at Nashville. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. CDT. Left-hander Zach Jackson (1-5, 4.97 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express opposite Sounds right-hander Claudio Vargas (0-0, 5.40 ERA).
