Springfield Cardinals News Release
Corpus Christi, TX -Visiting the Hooks for the first time in 2012, the Cardinals looked to continue their winning ways fresh of a series win over San Antonio down on the Gulf Coast in Corpus Christi.
Seth Maness took the ball for Springfield one start after he went 7.2 shutout innings against Tulsa. Jose Cisnero, the 26th best prospect in the Astros system, started for the Hooks.
Neither team could push a run across for the first three and a half innings until a Cardinals miscue opened the door for Corpus Christi. After a one out single by Jacob Goebbert, Chris Wallace hit a ball that Maness deflected to Kolten Wong. Wong tried to throw out Wallace at first, but it was wide of the bag and into the Cardinals' dugout. With runners at second and third, Andy Simunic grounded to third to score the first run of the game making it 1-0 Hooks.
In the 5th, the Hooks got a one out single by Jonathan Villar before Jon Singleton launched a two-out, two-run homer to left to give Corpus a 3-0 lead.
Springfield, who had just three base runners through the first five innings, busted out the bats in a big way in the 6th. After Kolten Wong singled to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, Jermaine Curtis blasted his first home run of the season to make it a 3-2 game. Cisnero was pulled after the homer and Alex Sogard took over on the hill. Oscar Taveras greeted him rudly with a single and Chris Swauger followed with a double to put runners at second and third. After a ground out by Kyle Conley, Jake Shaffer doubled down the left field line to score two more runs to give Springfield their first lead, 4-3. A wild pitch sent Shaffer to third and he would later score on a passed ball to give the Cardinals a 5-3 advantage.
Seth Maness pitched a great game as he went seven innings for the second straight start allowing three runs, two earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts. Deryk Hooker entered in the 8th and promptly allowed a solo homer to Brandon Barnes to make it a 5-4 game. After a single and a sacrifice, Andy Simunic singled to shallow center and Goebbert had stopped at third, but a bobble by Oscar Taveras in center field allowed Goebbert to score to tie the game 5-5. Michael Blazek replaced Hooker and retired the next two batters to keep the game even.
In the 9th, Michael Blazek retired the first batter, but Jonathan Villar, almost one year to the day of his walk-off homer against Springfield in his AA debut, struck again with another walk-off homer to beat Springfield 6-5 in the first of a three-game series.
Springfield will continue their series with Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon. The Redbirds will send Trevor Rosenthal to the mound against Brett Oberholtzer of the Hooks. Game time is scheduled for 1:05pm.
The Cardinals return to Hammons Field Wednesday, May 30th for a six-game homestand against San Antonio and Corpus Christi. Great tickets are still available, so visit the Hammons Field Ticket Office, go online at springfieldcardinals.com or by call (417) 863-2143.
