GENEVA, Ill. (5/23/12) - The Burlington Bees (20-25) relinquished a one run lead in the eighth inning and lost 4-to-3 to the Kane County Cougars (24-22). The Bees hit two consecutive home runs to open the second inning, but returned to an anemic offense the rest of the game.

Heading into the game, the Bees were 3-7 in their last ten games (including a five-game losing streak). In the seven losses, the Bees hit .179 and averaged only 2 runs per game. In the three wins, the Bees hit .333 and aver- aged 9.67 runs per game.

Few players came into the game playing consistently better in the last five or ten games. Sean Jamieson was hitting .313 in his last five games and started the game with a double into left field. But the Bees left Jamieson stranded at second. The Bees would eventually go 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Raul Alcantara gave the Bees a solid outing in his tenth start of the season. Alcantara pitched six innings and al- lowed six hits. The right-hander avoided walking a batter for the second time in a start this season, but only struck out two batters. Alcantara gave up a run in the bottom of the second and a solo home run in the third, but still left the game with a lead.

Both Eliezer Mesa and Bobby Crocker came into the series seeing the ball well. In fact, both had a batting aver- age of .500 in the three games. Both scored three runs and Crocker drove in three, while Mesa drove in four runs.

Mesa led off the second inning with his first home run as a member of the Burlington Bees. Mesa's home run came on the first pitch and bounced off scoreboard in left-center field. Crocker followed Mesa with a homer that might have surpassed Mesa's in distance. Crocker's first home run of the year gave the Bees a back-to-back series of homers and a 2-to-0 lead. The Bees scored another run in the fifth after Chih-Fang Pan led off with a triple.

But Max Perlman (1-2) struggled in his 1.2 innings and gave up the lead in the bottom of the eighth. The Bees lost by a final score of 4-to-3. Perlman received his second loss of the season.

The Bees play game two against the Cougars on Thursday night at 6 p.m. For information on Bees baseball, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
