Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA (May 22, 2012) - The Dash fell 7-5 to Salem in a Wednesday afternoon game at LewisGale Field. Winston-Salem has lost three straight games for the first time all season.
Three runs from Salem in the fourth inning proved to be the decisive margin. Drew Hedman and Shannon Wilkerson drew consecutive walks to lead off the frame. Michael Almanzar followed with a double to score both runners and tie the game 4-4. Almanzar reached third on a single. With no outs, he scored to give the Red Sox a 5-4 lead on an infield ground ball that the Dash turned for a double play.
The morning start was greeted by a strange first inning. Daniel Wagner singled to lead off and stood at third with one out after Trayce Thompson singled. Dan Black followed with a ground ball to Travis Shaw at first. Shaw stepped on first and threw to second where Thompson was tagged out to end the inning. However, after the inning had ended, home plate umpire Lawrence Reeves ruled Wagner crossed home before Thompson was tagged out at second, and the Dash led 1-0 after the top of the first.
After Tuesday night's low-scoring game, the runs flowed freely in the early innings. Salem (25-17) grabbed a 2-1 lead after Jackie Bradley Jr. lead off with a double. He scored his league-leading 37th run of the season on a one-out single from Shaw. The first baseman reached third on a double before scoring on a deep fly ball to center field.
Winston-Salem (24-19) tied the game in the second when Brady Shoemaker led off with his league-leading 54th hit of the season. Juan Silverio extended his hit streak to seven games with a single to score Shoemaker and even the score 2-2.
The Dash pushed back on top in the fourth. Nick Ciolli came to the plate with Shoemaker on first and blasted a double off the wall to score the go-ahead run. Silverio collected his second RBI of the game to score Ciolli and give the Dash a 4-2 lead.
After Salem added a run in the fifth, Juan Silverio doubled and scored in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5. The Red Sox extended the lead to 7-5 with a Drew Hedman solo blast in the seventh. Silverio finished the day 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
The Dash look to salvage the series in game three Thursday night. Matt Heidenreich (3-1, 3.78 ERA) takes the ball for Winston-Salem. The right-hander threw eight scoreless innings in his last outing. 2011 top draft pick Matt Barnes (2-0, 1.00 ERA) gets the nod for Salem. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Winston-Salem returns home to BB&T Ballpark for an eight-game homestand beginning with a Memorial Day doubleheader. First pitch on Monday, May 28 is set for 4:00 p.m.
