Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
As far as drama goes, the Winnipeg Goldeyes will be in tough in 2012 to top their performance on Opening Day.
The Goldeyes fell behind 8-1 before scoring 13 consecutive runs to beat the Amarillo Sox 14-9 before 6,518 fans at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium Friday night in a game that took 3:43 to play.
Amarillo scored once in the first, four times in the second and three times in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead through four innings. The Sox looked to deal the knockout blow in that fourth inning. Harrison Kain hit the first pitch he saw from Brian Leach over the left field fence to start the inning and was followed two batters later by a two-run home run from Jake Opitz.
"We were a little shocked. This isn't a normal baseball field," Goldeyes second baseman Matt Cusick said, referring to the deep outfield and strong winds. "You can score a lot of runs in a hurry here."
And boy did the Goldeyes ever.
After scoring once in the fifth, Price Kendall scored on a Jon Weber single in the sixth inning and then Luis Alen hit a three-run bomb to left field, cutting Amarillo's lead to 8-6.
Winnipeg completed the comeback in the seventh inning. After the first four batters reached base via either a base hit or an error, which scored Price Kendall, Matt Cusick hit a grand slam to left field, giving the Goldeyes an 11-8 lead.
"They brought in a lefty and I wanted to get on that fastball early," Cusick said. "I was just trying to get the barrel to the ball. Probably in a normal day, in a normal park it doesn't get out, but, hey, I'll take it."
Weber and Yurendell de Caster then drew two-out walks with the bases loaded later in the inning to put Winnipeg up 13-8. In total, the Goldeyes sent 13 men to the plate in the seventh inning.
Both sides scored a run in the ninth inning.
Goldeyes starting pitcher Ace Walker lasted just three innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Winnipeg used six other pitchers in the game. Kaohi Downing got the win after pitching an inning and a third.
The Goldeyes and Sox play the middle game of this series tomorrow night in Amarillo. Winnipeg will send lefty Chris Salamida to the hill, while the Sox will counter with Justin Garcia. Around the Association with Paul Edmonds on TSN 1290 begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the pre-game show at 6:30 p.m.
