St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (May 18, 2012) - It's only day one of the season, but St. Paul Saints manager George Tsamis is already making roster moves. The Saints signed right-haned pitcher Josh Cephas and released infielders Chris Cates and Don DiPetta.
The 25-year-old Cephas spent last season in the Independent Frontier League with the Evansville Otters. He went 4-3 with a 3.46 ERA in 33 games. In 41.2 innings pitched he walked 28 and struck out 43.
Cephas was a 34th round draft pick by the San Diego Padres in 2009 out of Southern Nazarene University. He spent one season in the Padres organization in 2010 and split time with the Rookie Level Arizona Padres and Low-A Eugene Emeralds. He went 1-0 with a 5.79 ERA and one save in eight games between the two stops. In 9.1 innings he walked three and struck out 10.
The Saints removed Jon Townsend and Ole Sheldon from the inactive list and in order to make room for the three players the Saints released Cates and DiPetta.
Cates was a non-roster invitee into camp and spent his career from 2007-11 with the Minnesota Twins organization.
DiPetta was signed out of the tryout camp and spent last year at Reinhardt University.
The Saints are at the league maximum 23 players, 11 pitchers and 12 position players. They must be down to the league maximum of 22 players by Saturday, May 26.
