WILMINGTON, DE - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, fell victim to a walk-off homerun Friday, dropping a 6-5 decision to the Wilmington Blue Rocks at a packed Frawley Stadium.

The ninth inning began with Randy Henry striking out Wilmington's Brian Fletcher. Guelin Beltre then reached on a ball that took a bad hop away from first baseman Brett Nicholas. The error seemed innocent at the time, but two batters later Juan Graterol doubled to the left side gap, scoring Beltre to cut the Myrtle Beach lead to 5-4. Kevin David then homered to left, his second of the season, to win 6-5. The loss is the first of the season for Randy Henry and his second blown save, but the first the team lost.

Myrtle Beach had a homer fest of its own earlier in the game. The Pelicans used two long balls to jump out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning. Jared Hoying led off with his third of the year, a solo shot to right. Josh Richmond belted his fourth of the year, most on the team, a three run blast. The shot scored Christian Villanueva and Nicholas, who had walked and doubled to reach.

The Pelicans' fifth run came in the fifth inning, when Hoying doubled with two outs, driven home by a Villanueva single to center. That made it 5-1.

The Blue Rocks got back into the game in the seventh when they scored twice of reliever Kyle DeVore. Both runs were unearned after an error on rightfielder Josh Richmond. It was 5-3 at that point.

Birds starter Roman Mendez went five, allowing one run and striking out four. Blue Rocks starter Tyler Sample allowed five runs in six innings. The homers were the third and fourth off him by the Pelicans this year.

Myrtle Beach looks to get back in the win column tomorrow at 6:05. Nick Tepesch starts against Jason Adam. For more information log on to MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
