Altoona Curve News Release
BOWIE, Md. - After squandering a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh, Kelson Brown's RBI triple in the top of the tenth lifted the Curve to a 4-3 extra-innings win over the Bowie Baysox and their first series victory away from Peoples Natural Gas Field during the 2012 season.
A seesaw affair early saw the Curve take the night's first advantage and hand it back almost instantly. Altoona got a run in the top of the first but allowed two in the bottom half of the opening inning to trail 2-1 heading to the second. Starting pitchers Nathan Baker and Cole McCurry settled into respective grooves, though neither would factor into the decision.
The Curve got Baker off the hook in the top of the fifth, evening the score on an Elevys Gonzalez RBI single and then going ahead 3-2 against McCurry with a run in the sixth on an RBI double from Ramon Cabrera.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, with two outs and a runner at third, Curve reliever Vic Black stumbled in his delivery, resulting in a balk call and a tie game. Neither Altoona nor Bowie was able to break through in the rest of regulation, setting the stage for Brown in the tenth.
Capping off a three-hit night, Brown cashed in Quincy Latimore's leadoff single in the tenth with the Curve left fielder at second and two outs, tripling past a sliding Bobby Stevens in left to give Altoona their final margin. Duke Welker (2-1) pitched the final two frames to earn the victory. Kyler Newby (2-1) took the loss in his lone inning of work.
Thursday, the Curve go for the series sweep over the Baysox, sending right-hander Phil Irwin (0-1, 7.20) in his second start against Bowie's Oliver Drake, making his season debut for the Baysox, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Airtime on ESPN 1430 in Altoona and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:35.
