DAVENPORT, Iowa (MAY 13, 2012) - The Quad Cities River Bandits offense was held to two hits and couldn't take advantage of 10 walks by Cedar Rapids pitching in a 2-1 loss to the Kernels in front of 3,097 fans on Mother's Day at Modern Woodmen Park.

The loss was the fifth in seven games for Quad Cities (19-18), which stayed four games out of first place in the Midwest League Western Division and fell into a tie with Kane County for third.

Cedar Rapids (16-21) scored its only two runs in the first inning against right-hander Tyrell Jenkins (1-2). Second baseman Kevin Moesquit drew a leadoff walk. Jenkins then struck out left fielder Ryan Jones before walking third baseman Kaleb Cowart. Two wild pitches allowed Moesquit to score the first run, and right fielder Andy Workman hit a single to center field to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the first, Quad Cities drew three walks but failed to score. The River Bandits did not record a hit until the third inning, when center fielder Nick Martini singled. They scored in the fifth inning with the help of four walks - two each by right-handed starter Austin Wood and left-hander Aaron Meade, who issued a two-out, run-scoring walk to catcher Juan Castillo before getting first baseman David Medina to ground out to end the inning.

Jenkins kept the Kernels scoreless after the first inning and matched a season high with a six-inning outing while allowing just three hits and four walks and striking out six batters. He threw a career-high four wild pitches, including the two that proved costly in the first. Right-hander Robert Stock took over in the seventh, and he threw a career-high three scoreless innings and struck out five batters - also a career high - while walking none.

Meade (1-0) held the 2-1 lead for the Kernels by working perfect innings in the sixth and seventh. He relieved Wood, who allowed one hit and one earned run in 4 2/3 innings. Wood struck out seven batters but issued a career-high seven walks.

The River Bandits did not get another base hit until the eighth, when designated hitter Colin Walsh led off the inning with a double down the left-field line against left-hander Stephen Tromblee. But Tromblee worked out of the inning by getting Castillo looking at strike three, retiring pinch-hitter Roberto De La Cruz on a groundout to first and striking out second baseman Luis Mateo.

In the ninth, River Bandits third baseman Garrett Wittels drew a leadoff walk, and right fielder Roberto Reyes was hit by a pitch from Tromblee. Shortstop Matt Williams' sacrifice put both runners in scoring position with one out. With the infield drawn in, Martini grounded out to shortstop for the second out. Right-hander Ty Kelley then entered the game to face left fielder Anthony Garcia, who grounded out to third base to end the game and earn Kelley his fifth save in as many chances.

After splitting the first two games, the River Bandits and Kernels play the third of four games Monday night at 7 p.m. Quad Cities has yet to announce a starter against Cedar Rapids left-hander Eswarlin Jimenez (0-2).
