Jesse Chavez Shuts Out the Zephyrs 8-0

Jesse Chavez silenced the Zephyrs' bats, leading the Las Vegas 51s to an 8-0 victory over New Orleans on Saturday at Zephyr Field.

Chavez (5-1) threw eight scoreless innings with five strikeouts and three hits. He walked none and retired 23 of the last 24 batters he faced, including the last 13 consecutively.

Adeiny Hechavarria led off the game with a home run to left field on a 2-0 count. Anthony Gose singled and scored on a groundout by Travis Snider to give Las Vegas an early 2-0 lead.

The third inning went just the same for the 51s with a single from Gose, who would score on a deep home run to left by Travis d'Arnaud. Las Vegas followed suit in the fourth, tacking on a solo home run from Gose for a 5-0 lead.

The 51s added two runs in the top of the eighth. Moises Sierra walked to lead off the inning, followed by an RBI double to center from Ricardo Nanita, and a single by Mike McCoy.

Scott Cousins, Chris Coghlan, and Mike Cervenak were the only Zephyrs to get a hit on the night. Las Vegas out hit New Orleans 11-3.

Alex Sanabia (3-2) took the loss for the Z's. He gave up six runs (five earned), and seven hits, including four home runs, with three strikeouts. Elih Villanueva pitched three scoreless innings of relief, fanning three and allowing two hits.

New Orleans will continue the series at 2 pm on Sunday. Southpaw Brad Hand (2-2, 3.58) will start for the Zephyrs, facing lefty Aaron Laffey (1-4, 5.63) for the 51s.
