Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Ender Inciarte's RBI single in the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie that had held since the fifth, and led the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 3-2 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Thursday night.
South Bend (19-15) scored against Fort Wayne (15-19) starter Colin Rea in the first inning. Rea allowed an infield single to Chris Ellison to begin the game, and Ellison advanced to second on a groundout by Tom Belza. After a wild pitch moved Ellison to third, he scored on a single by Gerson Montilla, making it 1-0 South Bend.
Rea made the start for Fort Wayne in place of scheduled starter Joe Ross, who was scratched from the outing approximately 30 minutes prior to first pitch after experiencing soreness in his right shoulder. It was the first start for Rea since August 31, 2011 as a member of the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League.
The TinCaps answered with single runs in the third and fourth innings, as Justin Miller plated Corey Adamson to tie the game at one, and Kyle Gaedele knocked in Travis Whitmore with an RBI groundout, putting Fort Wayne in front 2-1.
Silver Hawks starter John Pedrotty didn't yield another run over his outing, working six frames and striking out a season-high eight batters. His team's offense tacked on the tying run in the fifth inning against Fort Wayne's Robert Eisenbach (0-1). Ryan Court led off the inning with a triple, and came home on a groundout by Inciarte.
In the ninth inning, with Marc Bourgeois at second base, Inciarte struck again delivering the go-ahead run to give South Bend a 3-2 lead. The TinCaps got a ninth inning hit from Adamson, but DJ Johnson struck out three batters in the frame to record his third save of the season.
The rubber match is scheduled for Friday night at 7:05 PM. The scheduled starters are Matt Wisler for Fort Wayne and Jesse Darrah for South Bend.
NOTE: Fort Wayne shortstop Jace Peterson sustained an injury in a collision with pitcher Colin Rea at the conclusion of the first inning. Peterson was taken from the field on a backboard with the assistance of medical personnel. He was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center for further evaluation.
