Lexington Legends News Release
Neither team could manage an earned run in the game, but the Lexington Legends pushed across two runs in the third inning and made them stand up for a 2-1 victory over the host Asheville Tourists Tuesday night.
Asheville scored its run in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Brian Humphries singled and stole second. Jared Simon struck out, but Taylor Featherston hit a grounder up the middle for an infield hit, and when the ball got by second baseman Delino DeShields, Humphries, who had stopped at third, continued home with the game's first run.
The Legends answered in the third after it appeared that the inning was over. Asheville native John Hinson, who was six for 14 in the series, led off with a single. He moved to third on two infield outs, and was on at third when DeShields swung and missed on a third strike - but the ball got by catcher Will Swanner, and Hinson scored as DeShields reached first safely. Jordan Scott followed with a double to right center field - the only extra base hit of the game - and DeShields scored to give the Legends the 2-1 lead that would turn out to be the final score.
Luis Cruz (2-1) pitched the first six innings to get the win. Carlos Quevedo worked the seventh and eighth innings. Jason Chowning pitched the ninth to earn his fifth save, though Asheville did get the tying run to third base before Chowning retired Rosell Herrera on a grounder to second to end the game.
The Legends return home to face the Hagerstown Suns Thursday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
