INF Kurt Mertins Promoted to AAA Omaha

SPRINGDALE, AR - The Naturals' parent club, the Kansas City Royals announced a transaction on Friday afternoon affecting the Northwest Arkansas roster. Infielder Kurt Mertins has been promoted to Triple-A Omaha.

Mertins will be taking the place of Irving Falu on the Omaha Storm Chasers roster. Falu was promoted to Kansas City yesterday to replace Yuniesky Betancourt who was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Mertins was hitting .205 with four RBI and six runs scored in 25 games at the time of his promotion. The utility man has appeared at second base, third base right field, and designated hitter this season as a member of the Naturals.

Mertins is among the Naturals all-time leaders in several career categories. He is tied for third in games played (230) and in triples (9), with Anthony Seratelli, tied for fourth in RBI with Tim Smith (99), tied for third in doubles with Jeff Bianchi (40), fourth in at bats (815), sixth in runs scored (111).

The Placentia, California native will join Omaha for the third time in his career. He spent part of the 2010 and 2011 seasons in Triple-A and has compiled a .290 batting average in 90 games at that level.

Following the transaction, the Naturals' roster at 24 one below the Texas League limit of 25 active players.
