Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, Calif. - Jermaine Mitchell led off the bottom of the first with a home run, but the River Cats would not be able to score again, losing to the visiting Tucson Padres by a score of 5-1, dropping their record to 15-7 on the year.
The T-Pads got to work early, scoring in the opening frame on a solo shot from catcher Yasmani Grandal. Mitchell, who led off Thursday's series-opener with a triple, led off today's game with the 50th home run of his career in the bottom of the first inning, tying the game at one.
The Padres would tack on two more runs before the ninth inning, one on an RBI single from James Darnell, scoring Everth Cabrera, and the second on a solo shot from outfielder Sawyer Carroll in the sixth. They'd put two more on the board in the ninth after a two-out error from River Cats third baseman Stephen Parker extended the inning, giving the T-Pads a 5-1 lead they would not relinquish.
River Cats starter Travis Banwart was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts, lowering his season ERA to 6.26. Lefty Erick Threets pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk on three strikeouts. Mitchell finished 1-for-2 with a home run and two walks. Chris Carter paced the Cats, going 2-for-4 with his seventh double of the year.
Tucson starting pitcher Josh Geer went six innings, surrendering six hits, two walks and one run with four strikeouts. The Tucson bullpen combined to throw three perfect innings with three strikeouts. Four Padres had two hits including Cabrera who finished 2-for-4 with a run, a walk and three stolen bases.
The two teams return to Raley Field on a Sutter Health Fireworks Saturday at 7:05. Sacramento will send Bruce Billings (1-0, 2.25 ERA) to the hill to face Jorge Reyes (0-4, 5.48 ERA) of the T-Pads.
