Inland Empire 66ers News Release

Adelanto, CA - Inland Empire 66ers starter Nick Maronde threw his second straight quality start but for the second straight time his team could not drum up the offensive support to get him a victory. Instead Inland Empire (9-8) fell to two games back of division leading High Desert (11-6) after a Steven Proscia walk off home run gave the Mavs a 4-3 win.

Early on the 66ers suffered a scary moment as centerfielder Travis Witherspoon collapsed to the warning track after hitting the wall hard on a fly ball to center by Brad Miller. Miller would round the bases with an inside-the-park home run, and Witherspoon would leave the game the next inning.

The 66ers got that run right back the next inning on C.J. Cron's third home run of the season, but the tie wouldn't last long. Nick Maronde's bad luck continued in the bottom of the second as Patrick Brady homered to left on a ball that appeared to get help from the offensive friendly conditions in the High Desert. That homer made it a 3-1 lead for the Mavericks.

After that Maronde settled in and retired 15 of the next 18 he faced without allowing a run, while the 66ers offense scratched out two runs to tie the game heading to the late innings. But in the 9th Proscia led off with a blast to left to end the game. The 2:16 affair was the fastest game of the year for the 66ers and sent them to two back in the California League South.

Inland Empire will start an eight game, seven day, homestand Monday with a 7:05 contest against the Lake Elsinore Storm at San Manuel Stadium. The game can be heard on the home of 66ers baseball KCAA 1050 AM beginning with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Pre-Game show at 6:55.
