HIGHLIGHTS: The West Virginia Power beat the Greenville Drive 6-3 Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. Greg Polanco and Jodaneli Carvajal each hit solo home runs to help the Power to their third straight victory.
West Virginia took a 3-0 lead against Greenville starter Madison Younginer in the second. Polanco led off the inning with his third home run of the season. Willy Garcia singled, stole second, and scored when Elias Diaz reached on an error. Diaz then crossed home on a triple by Kirk Singer.
Boss Moanaroa hit a solo home run in the third inning to cut the Power lead down to 3-1.
The Drive knocked Power starting pitcher Zack Dodson out of the game with one out in the fifth. Jose Garcia reached on a leadoff single before Dodson induced a flyout from Moanaroa. The next two batters walked and Cody Koback singled in a run with the bases loaded to put Greenville within one at 3-2. Josh Poytress relieved Dodson and struck the next two batters out with the bases loaded to preserve the lead.
Jodaneli Carvajal hit a solo home run to lead off the home half of the inning to regain a two-run West Virginia advantage at 4-2.
The Power plated two on three straight hits in the seventh and Greenville countered with one in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Poytress (1-0) pitched three and two-thirds innings to gain the win, while Younginer (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on three hits over five complete innings. Jordan Cooper tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save.
The Power reached on 12 base hits, half of which were for extra bases, and won their third consecutive game after a five game losing streak. Carvajal, Bell, Polanco, and Gamache had two hits each to key the West Virginia offense. Koback and Matt Marquis had multi-hit games for the Drive.
The Power and Drive conclude this series Sunday afternoon. Nick Kingham and Mickey Pena will start for West Virginia and Greenville, respectively. The first pitch is slated for 2:05 pm, but is subject to the end of the Marshall vs. Rice game at Appalachian Power Park that begins at 10:05 am.
