POWER REPLAY: West Virginia rallied to tie the game in the eighth and beat Greenville 3-2 last night on a tenth inning wild pitch. The Drive took a 2-0 lead after four innings. Starter Matt Barnes and reliever Jason Garcia held the Power to just one over the first seven innings. West Virginia's second hit was a two-run home run by Willy Garcia with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the tenth, Alen Hanson doubled, advanced to third on an infield single, and scored on a wild pitch by Garcia.
NEW STREAKS POPPING UP: AsWest Virginia rides its first winning streak of the season (two games), two players are taking five game hitting streaks with them into their next contests. Alen Hanson is batting .455 over his last five with 10 hits in 22 at bats and has scored six times. Greg Polanco is hitting .368 with a seven for 19 clip in five games since April 9. The duo has matched Jodaneli Carvajal's season opening five game streak for the longest by any Power player this year.
FREE PASSES PILE UP: Zac Fuesser, Friday night's Power starter, has walked nine batters over his first seven innings pitched this season (two starts). In 2011, the southpaw walked 33 batters in 108.1 innings pitched (32 appearances).
YOUTH IS SERVED: Currently, none of the top five hitters by batting average on the Power roster are older than 20. Alen Hanson (20) is batting .385, Jose Osuna (19) is hitting .333, Greg Polanco (20) is at .323, Jodaneli Carvajal (20) is hitting .323 as well, and Josh Bell (19) is at .290.
STOPPED AT FIVE: The Power snapped a five game losing streak with Thursday's win over the Drive. West Virginia was outscored 41-24 during that stretch despite only being outhit 54-48.
START ME UP: Alen Hanson's first inning home run on Thursday was the first leadoff homer by a Power player in nearly two years. Evan Chambers was the last person to leadoff a game for West Virginia with a home run on May 29, 2010 against Hickory.
DRIVE IN: West Virginia and Greenville did not play at all during the 2011 season and are meeting for the first time since late April/ early May of 2010. The Drive won six of eight games that year, including three of four in Charleston. Greenville's success in 2010 tied the all-time series at 18 wins apiece, though West Virginia have regained the lead with two wins to start this set. Drive pitcher Yeiper Castillo is the only player on either roster who appeared in either of the 2010 series between the clubs.
PROMO UPDATE- APRIL 27: The Power will host a Charlies Reunion Night on April 17 at Appalachian Power Park. Former Charleston Charlies like Kent Tekulve, Steve Blass, and Dave Parker will be in attendance for the game and will sign autographs. A commemorative Charlies giveaway will also be handed out to the fans in attendance.
POWER POINTS: Copies of the 2012 Media Guide are available upon request... Greg Polanco hit home runs in back-to-back games on Wednesday and Thursday but was stymied last night. No player has hit one out in three straight since Rogelio Noris in May of 2010... West Virginia is tied with Kannapolis at three double plays turned, the fewest in the SAL.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was held to one hit in a 5-0 loss at San Francisco. Pitcher James McDonald had the lone hit in the defeat... Indianapolis walked off with a 3-2 win over Toledo... Altoona shutout Richmond 6-0. Nathan Baker pitched six innings of scoreless ball for the win... Bradenton also won in walk-off fashion, beating Fort Myers 3-2 in 10.
