Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs are proud to announce the annual planting of the Palm Trees. The nine Queen Palms are currently en route from Florida and will be planted in the left field berm on Monday, April 16. Planting of the palms will begin at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Monday.
For the 10th straight year, Kelch Turf Farms and Landscaping out of Kickapoo will plant the trees in the left field and left-centerfield berms. The palm trees have become a staple of Peoria Chiefs Stadium which will celebrate its 10th Anniversary on May 24.
The Chiefs started the tradition of Palm Trees in Peoria when the stadium opened on May 24, 2002 with 20 trees both inside and outside the stadium. The Chiefs switched to Queen Palms before the 2003 season as the Queens are better equipped to handle the changes in the Central Illinois climate. Just as last season, the Queen Palms will only be planted inside the stadium, as trees more indigenous to Central Illinois have been planted outside the stadium.
The Chiefs return home on Monday to kick off a season-long nine-game homestand with a 6:30 start against Cedar Rapids and half price tickets. The three-game series against Cedar Rapids concludes Wednesday, April 18 with $1 hot dogs, $1 fountain sodas and $1 ice cream sandwiches. The Great Lakes Loons come to Peoria April 19-21 for the first Thirsty Thursday and first day game which will be at 1:00 on Saturday, April 21. After the game on the 21st kids 12 and under can go on the outfield to collect candy dropped by a helicopter in the first ever Peoria Chiefs Stadium Candy Drop!
