Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Worcester Sharks 5-2 this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Max Sauvé and Craig Cunningham scored for Providence.
Looking for their first win in four games, the Worcester Sharks took control early in the first period and Mike Moore got the Sharks on the board just 2:51 after the opening faceoff. Nearly five minutes later, Moore struck again, his shot from the high circle finding its way past a screened Adam Courchaine. After the second goal, Courchaine was relieved by Karel St. Laurent, who is on recall from the Reading Royals (ECHL). The P-Bruins started to pick up the momentum and got several near-scoring chances on Tyson Sexsmith. However, the P-Bruins couldn't control the puck off some bad bounces and failed to find the back of the net. Instead, it was Worcester who struck next and took a 3-0 lead to go into the first intermission.
Tempers flared between the Route 146 rivals in the second period as 24 penalty minutes were added to the gamesheet. In between exchanging pleasantries and pushes and shoves, the teams exchanged scoring opportunities. Zach Hamill, Calle Ridderwall and Josh Hennessy nearly connected to put the P-Bruins on the board halfway through the frame, but bad bounces kept the P-Bruins off the board. Their efforts paid off with just 12 seconds to play in the frame on the man advantage when Sauvé collected the rebound of Cunningham's shot for his seventh goal of the year. Jamie Tardif also assisted on the play that brought the P-Bruins within two goals heading into the final frame.
The Sharks extended their lead to 4-1 at 11:24 of the final frame when Brodie Reid tallied his eighth goal of the season. Despite the three-goal deficit, the P-Bruins didn't let up and continued to throw shots at Sexsmith. Their efforts paid off at 13:15 when Cunningham tallied his 14th goal of the season. Colby Cohen and Sauvé assisted on the play that brought the P-Bruins within two goals. Despite their efforts, Providence couldn't find the back of the net again and Worcester sealed the win with an empty net goal at 18:41.
St. Laurent suffered the loss, blocking 15 Worcester attempts in 51:34 of play after relieving Courchaine. Sexsmith's 21 saves earned him the win.
The team closes out the weekend at The Dunk on Sunday versus the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The puck drops at 4:05 p.m. for Amica Lip Balm Night, which are free to 1,000 fans.
