Rampage Fall to Stars in Shootout, 5-4

CEDAR PARK, Texas - San Antonio defenseman Roman Derlyuk tied the game with less than three minutes remaining in regulation but the Rampage couldn't hold on in the shootout falling to the Texas Stars 5-4 at Cedar Park Center Friday night.

The Rampage lit the lamp first with a goal from Michal Repik at the 3:38 mark of the opening period. Repik, battling for the puck in the corner, skated toward the right corner of the crease and received a pass from Jon Matsumoto. Repik punched in his ninth goal of the season under the right leg of Texas goaltender Tyler Beskorowany. Evan Barlow was credited with the secondary assist on Repik's fourth goal in three straight games.

The Stars evened the score at the 8:00 mark with a power-play goal by Stephen Schultz. Stars center Travis Morin sent a pass from the right circle to Angelo Esposito at the right post. Esposito swung around and backhanded the puck to Schultz, who was stationed at the top of the crease, and punched it in over the right shoulder of Rampage goalie Dov Grumet-Morris.

With 5:11 remaining in the opening period, the Rampage regained the lead, 2-1, with a goal by Evan Barlow. Matsumoto gained possession of the puck in the left corner and skated to the back of the net before passing out to Barlow at the top of the crease. Barlow immediately tapped the puck over the glove of Beskorowany for his ninth goal of the season. Repik was credited with the additional helper as Matsumoto added his eighth assist in six straight games.

The Stars opened the second session with a power-play goal at the 2:49 mark to tie the game at 2-2. Colton Sceviour skated the puck over the blue line and handed off to Scott Glennie who skated the puck along the right wing boards and behind the net. Skating around the back of the net, Glennie then passed the puck out to Francis Wathier who fired a shot from the slot and caromed off of Grumet-Morris' glove into the net.

Greg Rallo scored with a blast from the right circle that went top shelf over Beskorowany to give the Rampage a 3-2 lead at the 6:07 mark. Nolan Yonkman and Bill Thomas were credited with the assists on Rallo's 100th professional goal.

With 5:05 remaining in the second period, Stars forward Matt Fraser scored an unassisted goal to tie the game 3-3. A Rampage defender misplayed the puck behind the net on a clearing attempt in which Fraser intercepted in the slot and fired a shot just inside the left post for his 24th goal of the season.

Fraser scored his second goal of the night at the 1:33 mark of the third period to put the Stars on top 4-3. Morin skated the puck to into the left circle and handed off to Esposito who fired a shot that was deflected out to Fraser at the doorstep. Fraser punched the puck over Grumet-Morris for his 25th tally of the season.

The Rampage tied the game with 2:28 remaining in regulation when Derlyuk tapped in the puck from the slot for his first goal of the season. Rallo and Mark Cullen were credited with the assists as Cullen extended his assist streak to six games.

After a scoreless overtime, Texas Stars forward Mike Hedden was the lone scorer in the shootout handing the Rampage their first shootout loss of the season.

Grumet-Morris made 40 saves on 44 Stars shots in his 19th consecutive start. Beskorowany turned away 28 of 32 Rampage shots for the win.

The Rampage (27-21-2-1) return to Cedar Park Center tomorrow evening to face the Stars at 7 p.m. to complete the back-to-back Lone Star Faceoff series.
