Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (36-15-2-1) earned a 4-2 road win over the division-leading Tri-City Americans (37-14-1-1) Friday in Kennewick, WA.

The win pulled Portland (75 points) to within one point of the Americans (76 points) for first place in the U.S. Division and second in the Western Conference.

Portland scored the lone goal of the first when Sven Bartschi beat Tri-Cities netminder Eric Comrie at the 16:20 mark to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead they'd take into the second period.

The score remained 1-0 going into the third after a scoreless second period, until Portland's Chase De Leo scored 2:52 into the frame to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. They extended the lead to 3-0 at the 8:28 mark on a power play goal by Ty Rattie, his 43rd goal of the season.

Tri-Cities got on the board at the 14:44 mark of the third on a goal by Justin Feser to cut Portland's lead to 3-1, then struck again with Comrie on the bench for an extra attacker at the 18:25 mark with a goal by Brendan Shinnimin to make it 3-2.

With Comrie again on the bench and the Americans looking for the equalizer, the Hawks put the finishing touches on the victory when Brad Ross scored into the empty net with 49 seconds remaining to give Portland the 4-2 win.

Mac Carruth was outstanding in net for Portland, stopping 30 of 32 shots for his 33rd win of the season, just two behind the franchise record of 35 set in 1997-98 by Brent Belecki. Comrie made 33 saves on 36 Portland shots in net for the Americans.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Seattle to take on the Thunderbirds.
