Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals kicked off their 2011-2012 season in style with wins on Friday and Saturday night at First Arena over the Trenton Titans. The Jackals try to stay unbeaten when they host the Florida Everblades this Friday at First Arena, with the puck dropping at 7:35 p.m., before heading to Wheeling to take on the Nailers in Elmira's first road game of the season on Saturday.

Elmira knocked off the Titans on opening night at First Arena with a 7-3 win on Friday. Evan Barlow tied a team record with six points, contributing three assists before recording a natural hat trick in the third period to put the game away. Brian Stewart made 30 saves in his Jackals debut for the victory.

On Saturday evening, the Jackals' defense and goaltending prevailed as the Jackals stifled the Titans, defeating Trenton 3-1. Timo Pielmeier, in his first start of the year, recorded 35 saves and was named the game's first star.

Elmira is now 5-0 in its regular-season openers since joining the ECHL in 2007-2008. All of the Jackals' ECHL openers have occurred on home ice.

BARLOW'S BIG NIGHT

Barlow's six-point game was the most by a Jackal since Justin Donati and Maxime Gratchev each recorded six points in an 11-3 Elmira win in Gwinnett on Nov. 14, 2009. The Strathmore, Alberta product leads all ECHL skaters with seven points (3g-4a) after the league's opening weekend.

DEMKOV STARTS OFF ON RIGHT FOOT

Rookie forward Artem Demkov, playing in his first two ECHL games, scored Elmira's first goals in both of its victories. The Minsk, Belarus native gave the Jackals their first goal of the 2011-2012 season 4:04 into Friday's contest, pushing a puck into an empty net after a Trenton turnover. Demkov put Elmira on the board with a goal on the doorstep 37 seconds into Saturday's game.

Elmira has now scored first in all five of its season-opening games since joining the ECHL. Demkov joins Brock McBride (2010-2011), Gratchev (2009-2010), Moises Gutierrez (2008-2009), and Benoit Doucet (2007-2008) as Jackals who scored the first goal of the season.
