Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI
- The Providence Bruins fell to the Manchester Monarchs 7-1 Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Josh Hennessy scored the P-Bruins' lone goal, his first in a Providence sweater.
The P-Bruins came out of the dressing rooms flying, testing Manchester goaltender Martin Jones early and often. Kirk MacDonald and Hennessy both nearly beat Jones on wrap-around attempts, but Jones blocked the early attempts. Despite Providence's offensive efforts, it was Manchester that got on the board first when Linden Vey won the faceoff back to David Meckler whose quick snap shot trickled through Anton Khudobin's legs at 2:41. In the following minutes Khudobin faced a barrage of shots, making diving and stick-less saves, but he was unable Cam Paddock's shot at 7:58, giving the Monarchs a 2-0 lead. Providence kept crashing Jones with shots and finally found the back of the net at 10:03 when Hennessy beat Jones on the wrap around, cutting the deficit to one with the power play goal. The team's exchanged shoves and punches as the period wound down, but a late Providence tripping penalty allowed Manchester to take a 3-1 lead going into the first intermission.
In the opening minutes of the second frame Providence continued to throw pucks at Jones, with both Jamie Arniel and Zach Hamill testing the Monarchs defense. It looked like the P-Bruins would have an opportunity to capitalize on the man-advantage when Hennessy found Arniel breaking through the slot, but Jones turned away his snap shot.
Manchester collected the rebound and went end-to-end allowing Slava Voynov to beat Khudobin on a one-timer, giving the Monarchs a 4-1 lead. Three minutes later at 13:15 the Monarchs made it 5-1 after which Khudobin was relieved by rookie Karel St. Laurent. The rookie was flawless blocking his first two shots, but Justin Azevedo found the back of the net for his second goal of the night, giving the Monarchs a 6-1 lead.
Manchester continued their offensive dominance in the third frame, taking a commanding 7-1 lead off a goal from David Kolomatis at 5:56.
Despite three man-advantage opportunities, Providence couldn't find the back of the net and Manchester held on for the 7-1 decision.
Khudobin suffered the loss, stopping 20 shots, before being relieved by St. Laurent who blocked 12 of 14 Manchester attempts. Jones' 29 saves earned him the win.
