GLENS FALLS, NY - Brayden Schenn recorded a hat trick and the Phantoms scored three power play goals as Adirondack defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 6-3 at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Friday night. With the win, Adirondack improves to 2-0-0-0 overall. The Sound Tigers drop to 1-2-0-0 with the loss.
Adirondack took the lead just 3:12 into the first period when Tom Sestito gathered the puck in the slot and backhanded a rebound past Sound Tigers goaltender Anders Nilsson. The Sound Tigers responded 4:10 later when Chris Langkow scored his first goal as a Sound Tigers, taking a Tony Romano feed from behind the net and lifting it over Michael Leighton to even the score at one.
The two sides remained tied until the early stages of the second period, when Brayden Schenn fired from the slot on the power play to beat Nilsson for the first of his three goals. Justin DiBenedetto evened the score once again at the 4:39 mark of the second period. Casey Cizikas slid a pass above the crease to DiBenedetto, who one-timed it past Leighton for his fourth goal in two games, and the Sound Tigers first power play goal of the season to make the score 2-2. Penalties continued to hurt the Sound Tigers though, and Adirondack netted their third power play tally just 62 seconds later. After Trevor Frischmon went off for slashing, Harry Zolnierczyk snapped a shot from the slot past Nilsson, and Adirondack carried a 3-2 lead into the final period.
The Sound Tigers had the man advantage for four of the first six minutes of the third period, but were unable to convert on either chance. Dan Jancevski added his first goal of the season on a shot from the blue line at 8:39 to make the score 4-2 in favor of Adirondack, and Schenn converted on a Sound Tigers turnover 1:48 later to increase the Phantoms lead to three. Sound Tigers captain Jeremy Colliton scored his first goal of the season on the power play with 4:53 left in regulation, bringing the Sound Tigers within two. However, Schenn iced the game for the Phantoms with an empty net goal and Adirondack came away with the 6-3 win.
Nilsson took the loss for the Sound Tigers, allowing five goals on 25 shots. Leighton earned the win with 33 saves. The two teams combined for five power play goals in the game.
The Sound Tigers look to bounce back tomorrow evening when they face the Connecticut Whale at the XL Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
