Iowa Cubs News Release
Jay Jackson tied both a career-high and individual season-high with 11 strikeouts over six innings of work but it wasn't enough as Nashville starter Mike Fiers threw a complete-game three-hit shutout to send the Sounds over Iowa 1-0 Wednesday night at Principal Park.
Fiers (7-0, 1.21) bested Jackson on the mound. He allowed just three hits in the game and was extremely efficient on the mound, needing just 99 pitches for his complete-game victory. Fiers walked one and struck out nine.
Nashville broke the scoring barrier in the fifth inning, getting back-to-back hits off of Jackson with two outs in the inning. Edwin Maysonet singled on a line drive to right field before Jordan Brown doubled to the wall in left-center. Maysonet beat the throw home to give the Sounds all the scoring they would need behind Fiers.
Jackson (7-14, 5.40) was tagged with the tough-luck loss. His 11 strikeouts are the most he has recorded with Iowa and tie his career-high he set in 2009 with Daytona. Jackson also tied teammate Chris Rusin for the individual team-high for the season. Rusin recorded his 11-strikeout game on August 8th against Sacramento.
Despite losing, Jackson also posted his sixth-straight quality start and finished up an impressive August. In six starts this month, Jackson went 2-3 with a 2.87 ERA, his best mark this season since going 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA in two April starts.
Robert Coello added three innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen. Coello has not allowed a run in five-straight appearances (11.0 IP), and in 18 total relief appearances has only yielded five runs (four earned) for a 1.04 ERA.
Iowa and Nashville complete this series Thursday night at Principal Park. Right-hander Wily Peralta (2-0, 2.16) will take the mound for Nashville and face Cubs' RH Austin Bibens-Dirkx (4-5, 6.43). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
