August 31, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced two separate trades and corresponding roster moves today:
-
Acquired catcher Matt Treanor from Kansas City in exchange for a player to be named later or cash
considerations.
-
Acquired left-handed pitcher Michael Gonzalez from Baltimore in exchange for a player to be named later.
-
Recalled right-handed pitcher Wilmer Font and placed him on the 60-day disabled list.
-
Designated right-handed pitcher Tim Wood for assignment.
Treanor, 35, was traded by Texas to Kansas City on March 28. He has spent the entire season with the Royals, batting .226 (42-186) with 3 homers, 6 doubles, and 21 RBI in 65 games. He leads the Royals with 62 starts behind the plate and has caught 11 of 51 (21.6%) attempted base stealers. Treanor has missed all of August after being placed on the concussion disabled list on July 31, after which he was transferred to the regular 15-day disabled list. He has played 7 games with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on injury rehabilitation assignment, going 1-for-3 in his last game on Sunday vs. Tulsa. His last big league game was July 30 at Cleveland.
Treanor was originally acquired by Texas in a March 22, 2010 trade with Milwaukee. He led the American League- champion Rangers in games caught last year and homered in the ALCS against New York. Last year, he established career highs for games (82), at-bats (237), hits (50), homers (5), and RBI (27).
Gonzalez, 33, has gone 2-2 with a 4.27 ERA (22 ER/46.1 IP) in 49 relief appearances for Baltimore in 2011. The South Texas native and resident has held left-handed batters to a .211 (19-90) average this season, as lefties have a career .212 (96-452) mark against Gonzalez. He has tossed 12.1 scoreless innings over his last 13 outings beginning July 22, with opponents batting .122 (5-41) in that span. Gonzalez has allowed runs in just one of his last 19 appearances.
Gonzalez has gone 17-21 with a 2.89 ERA (113 ER/351.2 IP) over 380 games in his big league career, all in relief with Pittsburgh (2003-06), Atlanta (2007-09), and Baltimore (2010-11).
Font, 21, has not appeared in a game this season after having "Tommy John" ligament transplant surgery on his right elbow on Oct. 1, 2010 performed by Dr. Keith Meister at the Medical Center of Arlington. The right-hander was added to the club's 40-man roster on November 19 and has spent the entire campaign on the disabled list of High-A Myrtle Beach.
Wood was acquired from Pittsburgh on a trade waiver claim on August 18. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Wood to the minor leagues. The right-hander has posted no record with a 9.64 ERA (5 ER/4.2 IP) and one save over 4 relief appearances with Triple-A Round Rock since being acquired. He has combined to go 2-0 with a 3.49 ERA (19 ER/49.0 IP) and 24 saves in 44 appearances at the minor league level this season between Triple-A Indianapolis and Round Rock, and was 0-3 with a 5.63 ERA (5 ER/8.0 IP) in 13 games in the majors with Pittsburgh.
With these moves, the Rangers still have a full 40-man roster.
JON DANIELS AVAILABILITY: Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels will be available to discuss these moves at 3:30 p.m. CDT today in the Media Interview Room at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
