Ninth-Inning Homer Downs Tucson

Michael Saunders hit a game-ending home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday as the Tacoma Rainiers beat the Tucson Padres, 4-2. The Padres scored two early runs and led until the eighth inning when Tacoma tied the game on a two-run single by Chris Gimenez. Pat Neshek entered in the bottom of the ninth and got two outs quickly before allowing a single to Greg Halman and the home run to Saunders.

The Padres first run scored in the third when Eric Patterson hit a double to score Anthony Contreras from first. Luis Martinez reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the fourth to score Matt Clark with the Padres second run. Jeremy Hefner lost a shot to get the win, despite one of his best outings of the season. Hefner pitched six shutout innings for Tucson and struck out five in the no decision.

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Padres. Tacoma was officially eliminated from playoff contention after Reno beat Fresno Monday night. The T-Pads are now 62-75 with seven games remaining in the 2011 season.
