Iowa Cubs News Release
Brad Snyder hit a go-ahead RBI single and Bryan LaHair launched his 37th home run of the season as part of a five-run seventh inning to give Iowa an 8-5 come-from-behind win over Nashville Monday night at Principal Park.
The I-Cubs entered the bottom of the seventh inning down 5-3 after Sounds' starter Amaury Rivas limited Iowa to three runs (one earned) and six hits over five and two-thirds innings. Ryan Flaherty greeted reliever Mike McClendon with a ground-ball single into center to begin the rally. Brett Jackson followed with a double down the the right-field line and Lou Montanez knocked in both runners in with a triple to right field to tie the game at 5-5. Snyder then hit a ball through the left side of the infield as Montanez came home to score and LaHair hit the first pitch he saw from McClendon over the wall in left-center to put Iowa up 8-5. LaHair's 37th blast of the season ties him for the Iowa single-season franchise record with Joe Hicks.
Brandon Boggs and Martin Maldonado each hit two-run home runs for Nashville in the fourth and sixth innings respectively. Maldonado's shot gave the Sounds a 4-3 lead after Iowa took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth on Lou Montanez' RBI-single that scored a second runner after a throwing error by Nashville right fielder Caleb Gindl.
Iowa starting pitcher Chris Rusin pitched six and two-thirds innings. He gave up five runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out two.
Hung-Wen Chen (1-0, 3.00) picked up the win in relief. Chen pitched just one-third of an inning, coming on in relief of Rusin in the seventh inning to get the final out.
Blake Parker picked up his fourth save of the season after pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Parker got out of a two-out bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and retired the Sounds in order in the ninth.
McClendon (5-5, 3.54) was charged with the loss after giving up the lead in the seventh inning. McClendon pitched one and one-third innings. He gave up five runs on five hits, walked one and struck out one.
Iowa and Nashville continue this four-game series Tuesday night at Principal Park. Sounds' RH Josh Butler (8-7, 5.12) and Cubs' RH Nick Struck (2-3, 4.85) are the expected starters for tomorrow's contest. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
