Navarro Named PCL Player of the Week

SALT LAKE CITY (August 29, 2011) - The Pacific Coast League announced today that Salt Lake Bees first baseman Efren Navarro has been named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for August 22-28. This is the second Player of the Week award for a Bees player this season and the first of Navarro's career.

Navarro batted a PCL-best .593 (16-for-27) with a .633 on-base percentage and 1.185 slugging percentage in seven games last week, collecting three doubles, two triples, three home runs and seven runs batted in. Along with batting average, the left-handed hitter ranked atop the league leader board in six additional categories, including hits, triples, extra-base hits, total bases, slugging percentage and OPS. Navarro had at least one extra-base hit in all seven games and turned in a three-hit game on four different occasions.

Navarro, 25, has played in 130 games for the Bees this season, where he is second on the team in batting average (.317), hits (153), doubles (35), triples (6) and runs scored (75). He has also hit a career-high 12 home runs this season, all coming after July 1. While he is batting .424 (28-for-66) with a .924 slugging percentage since August 12, the California native has paired his offense with a strong defensive performance all season, leading all qualifying first baseman with a .998 fielding percentage. Navarro has committed three errors in 1,326 chances.

Navarro was originally selected by the Angels in the 50th round of the 2007 draft.
