Drive Blanked by GreenJackets, 7-0
August 28, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Augusta GreenJackets (66-65, 35-26) exacted a little revenge Sunday afternoon at Fluor Field. Following consecutive defeats at the hands the hometown Drive (73-60, 35-28), the GreenJackets rebounded for a 7-0 victory. Greenville managed just three hits in the loss, while Augusta pounced for 14 - six of which went for extra bases.
Just as Brandon Workman had done to the GreenJackets on Friday, Augusta's Mario Rodriguez (8-5) baffled the Drive over 6.0 scoreless innings. Although he did allow one hit and a walk, the southpaw faced the minimum number of hitters during his outing, aided by a caught stealing and a double play.
Entering with the league's sixth best earned run average, the Drive's Keith Couch (6-5) will chalk Sunday's 4.1 inning start up as forgettable. In his shortest outing since joining the rotation on June 2nd, was tagged for five runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out three.
The GreenJackets wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring three times in the top of the first. Devin Harris, who recorded a hit in each of his first four at bats en route to going 4-for-5, and Ryan Scoma each tallied an RBI-single, while Raynor Campbell added a run-scoring double.
After throwing 37 pitches in the first inning, Couch settled down and tossed the same number over his next three innings, with the only blemish coming as the red hot Harris homered with two outs in the top of the third.
The early advantage was more than enough for the GreenJackets, as the Drive's first baserunner did not come until Felix Sanchez led off the bottom of the fourth with a bunt single. But after stealing second base - his 54th swipe of the season - Sanchez was gunned down trying to steal third. Greenville managed to put just one other baserunner in scoring position in the game when Sean Coyle doubled in the bottom of the seventh.
Gaspar Santiago pitched the final 3.0 innings for Augusta, striking out four, to preserve the shutout and earn his first save of the season.
The Drive and GreenJackets meet in the fourth contest of the five-game series on Monday, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM from Fluor Field. Right-hander Miguel Celestino (9-5, 3.96 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, while Augusta counters with right-hander Shawn Sanford (9-9, 2.61 ERA).
Because of the record-setting results, Monday's game will also feature a pre-game parade and recognition of the 2011 Summer Reading All-Stars, presented by Michelin North America. Several thousand Upstate children were already recognized during Sunday's game.
