
Dowdy, Nowak and Clinton debut for \'Birds

Lakewood, N.J. - The Delmarva Shorebirds dropped both games of the doubleheader to Lakewood on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Park, 4-2 in game one and 3-2 in game two. The Shorebirds fall to 1-2 in the second half while the âClaws improved to 2-1.
In game one, Lakewood jumped to an early lead in the first inning. Two singles, a fielder's choice and a walk loaded the bases. Shorebirds starter Luis Noel walked Geancarlo Mendez to force in the first run. Then, Noel hit Domingo Santana to give the âClaws a 2-0 lead.
The Shorebirds cut into the deficit in the third. Michael Mooney hit a one out single. Mikey Planeta followed with a single to advance Mooney to third. With one out, Planeta was cut in a rundown between first and second and Mooney came down the line to score.
Lakewood built a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a solo homer by Anthony Hewitt to begin the inning.
The Shorebirds pulled within a run in the fifth. Garabez Rosa hit leadoff double through the left-center gap. With two outs, Planeta hit a soft grounder up the middle that Edgar Duran threw low to first, allowing Rosa to come into score.
The âClaws added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Cameron Rupp singled and later came into score on a single to third by Edgar Duran.
Lakewood starter Garret Claypool earned the win over six innings. He scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run. Shorebirds starter Noel was pinned with the loss.
Juan Sosa picked up his eighth save of the year by closing out the Shorebirds in the seventh inning.
In game two, Lakewood got off to an early start. In the second inning, they plated two runs to build a 2-0 lead. Domingo Santana was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Travis Mattair hit an RBI double. Then, Miguel Alvarez hit a bloop double down the left field line to score Mattair.
The Shorebirds fought back in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Mikey Planeta hit an RBI single to score Joe Oliveira, who walked to start the frame. In the sixth, Garabez Rosa hit a hard grounder to second and Ty Kelly, who hit a leadoff single, beat the throw to the plate to tie the score at 2-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Duran hit a low-lying fly ball off the wall in right-field to score Alan Schoenberger from first to give the âClaws a walk off 3-2 win.
Chase Johnson picked up the win over one scoreless inning. Tim Adleman was tagged with the loss.
Three Shorebirds made their debuts in game two. Jeremy Nowak went 2-for-3 while Chris Clinton went 0-for-3. Josh Dowdy, who nailed down 15 saves last season for Delmarva, tossed a scoreless fifth inning and struck out three batters.
The Shorebirds and BlueClaws play the finale on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.
