Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs used ten hits and nine walks to defeat the Trenton Thunder 11-4 Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. It is the third straight win for the Sea Dogs who improve to 25-43.
Trenton starter Alan Horne (0-1) made his first appearance since 2009 after recovering from a torn right rotator cuff. The return would not go well for the 2007 Eastern League Pitcher of the Year as he failed to record an out. Horne faced six batters; he walked five and allowed a single to Alex Hassan forcing him from the game, charging him with four runs. Oscar Tejeda added a sacrifice fly off Craig Heyer, who relieved Horne, as Portland took a 4-0 lead and never looked back.
Alex Wilson (6-4) tossed 5.2 shutout innings to earn his sixth win of the season. The 24 year-old scattered four hits and struck out a season high eight batters. He lowered his ERA to 2.92, matching Stephen Fife for tops on the team.
Eight of the nine Portland batters recorded at least one RBI. Jon Hee was the only batter not to drive-in a run, but ended up scoring twice in the route.
Ryan Khoury, in his second game back with the organization, went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored, and two RBI including a two run double in the sixth to give Portland a 7-0 lead.
Alex Hassan led the Portland hit parade with three hits including a RBI double in the seventh raising his average to .326. Tim Federowicz and Tejeda each chipped-in with two RBI's, including a RBI Triple by Tejeda in the seventh.
For the second straight night every Portland starter reached base safely. Only Jeremy Hazelbaker and Chih-Hsien Chiang were without a hit.
Trenton would strike for one run in the seventh and two in the eighth off Miguel Gonzalez. Corban Joseph was 3-for-4 for the Yankees affiliate including a RBI single in the seventh scoring former Sea Dog Jason Place. Jose Gil added a two run double in the eighth. Cody Johnson delivered a RBI single in the ninth off Santo Luis to complete the Thunder scoring.
The Sea Dogs look for the series sweep Thursday night at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field with fireworks to follow. Portland will send right-handed pitcher Chris Balcolm-Miller (1-3, 3.31) to the mound. Trenton will counter with lefty Manny Banuelos (2-1, 3.49). Tickets are available and can be purchased by calling the Sea Dogs Ticket Office at 207-879-9500 or online at www.seadogs.com.
