Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Akron, Ohio- The Portland Sea Dogs built an early four run lead, but couldn't hold it as the Akron Aeros fought back for a 9-4 win Saturday night. The Sea Dogs held off the Aeros until the seventh inning, when Akron exploded for six runs on five hits. Portland scored all four of its runs in the second inning. Paolo Espino (4-0) shut them down from there to earn his third win of the season. Caleb Clay (0-2) gave up all six Akron runs in the seventh and was tagged with his second loss.
Both starting pitchers left the game after just two innings of work, leaving the result in the hands of the bullpens. TJ McFarland departed for Akron after allowing six hits and all four Portland runs in two innings. Stolmy Pimentel left despite giving up just a run and three hits through his two frames.
The Sea Dogs got to McFarland with five straight hits in the second inning. Reynaldo Rodriguez scored Tim Federowicz on an RBI triple. Jorge Padron followed with a run-scoring single. After singles by Oscar Tejeda and Vladimir Frias loaded the bases, Drew Dominguez picked up his first Double-A RBI on a groundout. Alex Hassan closed the scoring with another RBI hit.
The Aeros came right back, scoring a run each in the second, third and fourth innings. The big inning would finally come after a few failed attempts. After Tim Fedroff tied the game with a two-out RBI hit, Beau Mills blasted a two-run double to give Akron the lead for good. Mike McBride was intentionally walked. Then, Juan Diaz provided the final insurance with a three-run home run to make it 9-4.
The Sea Dogs wrap up the series in Akron tomorrow afternoon. Portland returns to Hadlock Field for a three-game series with the Trenton Thunder starting Tuesday, June 21st. That night will be Jimmy Buffett night. The ZOOperstars will be in town for a show during the game on June 22nd. Tomorrow, the Sea Dogs will have their 4th annual Father's Day 5K Road Race, starting at 9:15 AM. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
