Drive Conclude Road Trip with 5-3 Win Over 'Dogs
June 15, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, SC - With just four games remaining in the first half of the 2011 regular season, the Drive will be riding a strong wave of momentum as they return home against the Savannah Sand Gnats, who clinched the Southern Division title on Tuesday. Greenville (34-32) capped their most successful road trip of the season with a 5-3 win over the Charleston RiverDogs (25-41), finishing their seven-game trek with a 4-3 record.
Despite posting a run in the top of the second on Felix Sanchez's groundout, the Drive left a pair of runners in scoring position which proved costly as the 'Dogs pounced for two runs in the home half of the inning.
Only one of Greenville starting pitcher Kyle Stroup's two runs allowed was earned during his 4.0 inning outing, coming on Rob Segedin's leadoff round tripper in the bottom of the second. Charleston then capitalized on a Sanchez error in right-field to take a one-run lead.
But the Drive answered in the top of the fourth by sending eight batters to the plate, totaling four runs on four hit. Henry Ramos and Xander Bogaerts led off with consecutive singles, and came around to score as Anderson Feliz and Kelvin DeLeon each committed a defensive miscue on Bogaerts batted ball. Miles Head's two-out, two-run double provided the cushion the Drive eventually needed for the victory.
Setting a career-high with seven strikeouts, reliever Chris Martin (4-0) allowed just one run in 4.0 innings out of the bullpen, scattering five hits and a walk. Justin Erasmus shut the door on the RiverDogs, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning to earn his first save since joining the Drive on June 6th.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field to closeout the first half of the 2011 regular season with a four-game series versus the Savannah Sand Gnats on Thursday. A pair of South Atlantic League Southern Division All-Stars will toe the rubber for their respective teams, with southpaw Manuel Rivera (4-3, 4.10 ERA) heading to the mound for Greenville while Savannah counters with right-hander Taylor Whitenton (3-1, 3.38 ERA).
Tomorrow's opener is set for 7:05 PM, and is Dollar Drink Night at the ballpark. For more information regarding single-game tickets, luxury accommodations, group outings, and ticket plan packages call (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com.
