Silver Hawks Shutout Cedar Rapids at Home

South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks picked up a fourth straight win with an 8-0 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels Tuesday night at Coveleski Stadium. With the win, the Silver Hawks finish the month of May on a 20-11 tear.

The Silver Hawks jumped on Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Suammy Baez (LP, 1-6) early, scoring seven runs in the first three innings of the ballgame. In the first inning, Mike Freeman doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single from Yazy Arbelo. South Bend added two runs in the second frame against the Cedar Rapids right hander. Roberto Ortiz and Raul Navarro walked on back-to-back at-bats and Zach Walters came through with two outs on a two-run single to extend the Silver Hawks lead to 3-0.

It was ultimately a four-run third inning that knocked Baez from the game. Following a Matt Helm single to lead off the inning, Ramon Castillo picked up his third home run of the season on a two-run blast to left-center. Ender Inciarte singled home Roberto Ortiz, who walked, with two outs. Mike Freeman continued his hot hitting with an RBI single to plate Inciarte. Baez gave up eight hits and seven runs, five of them earned, in three innings.

South Bend capped off the win by scoring an eighth run in the eighth inning off reliever Beau Brooks. Inciarte doubled and Walters earned his third RBI of the game on a double to left-center. Walters had two hits and three RBI's in five at-bats.

Patrick Schuster (WP, 4-2) turned in a dominant performance on the mound for the Silver Hawks. The lefty threw six scoreless innings, scattering three hits and walking four. Schuster struck out four Cedar Rapids batters in the winning effort.

Eury De La Rosa kept the shutout in tact in two innings of work. De La Rosa struck out one while giving up a base hit in the eighth. Mike Bolsinger threw a perfect ninth inning to close out the 8-0 victory.

The fourth straight win improves the Silver Hawks to 27-25 on the season and 6-1 on the current homestand.

The Silver Hawks continue the three game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) on Wednesday evening. RHP Bradin Hagens (4-2, 3.48 ERA) will start for South Bend against RHP Justin La Tempa (2-3, 3.09 ERA).
