Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs and the Maine Children's Cancer Program officially kicked off the 2011 TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids campaign Tuesday with a media speed pitch competition held at Hadlock Field. The event raised $2,380.00 dollars for the Maine Children's Cancer Program.
Tuesday's event marked the official start to the fundraising effort of the 2011 TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program. Media members, sponsors, Sea Dogs pitchers and coaches, and supporters of the program were each allowed three pitches, depending on how fast they threw, the Sea Dogs donated a pre determined amount of money. For example a pitch between 30-39 mph was $30, 40-49 mph earned $40, etc. There was a three way tie for first place with Matt Rogers from the Maine Children's Cancer Program Board of Directors, and Travis Lee and Dave Guthro from WMTW News 8 each raising $170.00 with their three pitches.
Additionally, the Sea Dogs' pitching staff has added their own event to raise money for the Maine Children's Cancer Program; "Mustache May". The pitchers are growing mustaches for the month of May and are asking for pledges, which will go directly to the Maine Children's Cancer Program, for growing mustaches. Each donation, gets fans a ticket to the May 29th game and the ability to get a picture with the player whom they have pledged. Pledges can be made in $15, $50, and $100 increments at www.seadogs.com or by calling the Sea Dogs Ticket Office at 207-879-9500.
The TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program raises money for the Maine Children's Cancer Program. For every strikeout thrown by a Sea Dogs pitcher, money is generously donated by numerous businesses and individuals with TD Bank leading the way with $10.00 per strikeout. The program has raised over four million dollars in the program's 17 year history.
The Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program was developed in 1995 when the Portland Sea Dogs and Peoples Heritage Bank teamed together to combine their resources to support a community activity to enrich the quality of life in Maine. Together they created the season long fundraising activity for the Maine Children's Cancer Program, in which people pledge any amount of money for each Portland Sea Dogs' pitcher strikeout. Through the years the program has evolved into the largest fundraising program for the Maine Children's Cancer Program, raising around $300,000 annually.
