Zephyrs Sweep Redbirds in Series

MEMPHIS, TN - New Orleans used a late solo home run to top Memphis 6-5 Thursday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

Memphis scored in the first inning off of a pair of wild pitches and an RBI-single by Matt Carpenter. New Orleans scored in the fourth from a wild pitch and a Mike Cervenak three-run home run while Ozzie Martinez hit another homer in the fifth for the Zephyrs to take a 5-2 lead.

Nick Stavinoha drove in the third Redbirds run on a single to left field. After Memphis was able to tie it up 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run triple hit by Shane Robinson, the score remained tied and the game headed into extra innings. One out and a former Redbird later, Ruben Gotay had hit the game winning solo-jack to centerfield. Z's reliever Frank Mata had a 1-2-3 10th inning to end the game and pick up the save.

Zephyrs lefty reliever Dustin Richardson earned the win pitching two scoreless innings while striking out two to wrap up their first series sweep of the season. Memphis starter Raul Valdes took the loss giving up five runs on four hits while walking three and fanning nine.

The Redbirds head to Iowa tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The 'Birds send Lance Lynn to the bump in the first game to face Iowa's southpaw J.R. Mathes.

Memphis' next homestand begins Saturday, April 23 with Iowa and Round Rock visiting AutoZone Park.
