Iowa Cubs News Release
Albuquerque, NM - After a solid 3-1 start in Round Rock to begin their 2011 season on the road, the Cubs found Albuquerque to be a much less welcoming host. The Isotopes (5-3) had won the first three games of the four-game set, until the Cubs (4-4) were able to escape town with a win on Thursday afternoon to even their record at .500 for the year.
For the third consecutive game, it was Albuquerque who took the early lead in the game. The banged up 'Topes had to rely on some new faces in the game, including Charlie Mirabal, who was rushed into action today from extended spring training. But, in the bottom of the second, Mirabal delivered a two-run double. He went on to finish the game 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
The Cubs responded in the 3rd with two runs of their own. Fernando Perez led off the inning with a single, and then stole second base. Perez scored on a single by Lou Montanez. Marquez Smith provided a two-out double that would score Montanez and tie the game.
The next inning, it was Bobby Scales, extending his six-game hitting streak with a double to deep centerfield that scored Coello and Perez, giving the Cubs a lead they would not surrender. Montanez would go on to blast a two-run home run through a howling Albuquerque wind which was gusting up to 40 mph. Scott Moore later added a sac-fly RBI to score Max Ramirez.
Robert Coello (1-1) earned the win, his first-career PCL victory. He went five innings, giving up eight hits, two walks, and striking out four. He gave up four earned runs, including two in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 7-6 game. Coello, also added two hits and a run scored to his line for the day.
Bobby Scales, who leads the team and PCL in doubles, hit his second of the game in the top of the seventh. The two-out, three-run double broke open the game and capped Scales' five-RBI day at the plate.
John Gaub pitched an inning of scoreless relief, and Chris Carpenter held the Isotopes scoreless for two additional innings. Scott Maine came on in a non-save situation and recorded the final three outs of the game, although he did allow two runs in his inning of work.
The Cubs head home now, to open up a four-game series against the Memphis Redbirds. I-Cub career-wins leader J.R. Mathes (0-0) is scheduled to make the start for Iowa and will oppose Lance Lynn (1-0) of Memphis. This will be the first game of an eight-game home stand for the Cubs.
First pitch is set for 7:05, with gates opening at 5:30. The first 1,000 fans will receive a magnet schedule sponsored by Bob Oliver Heating & Air Conditioning. There will also be fireworks after the game sponsored by Mediacom. For tickets, fans can call (515) 243-6111 or visit iowacubs.com.
