Ta'Shia Phillips Traded to Mystics

WASHINGTON, D.C. ¬" Washington Mystics General Manager and Head Coach Trudi Lacey announced today that the team has acquired center Ta ¬â¢Shia Phillips, guard Kelly Miller and a 2012 first round draft pick from the Atlanta Dream in exchange for guard Lindsey Harding and the Mystics ¬â¢ second round pick in the 2012 WNBA draft. Phillips was selected by Atlanta in the first round (eighth overall) of today ¬â¢s WNBA draft, marking the first time the Mystics have added two first round draft picks to their roster since 2002 (Stacey Dales and Asjha Jones).
¬ÅWe were extremely excited to be able to move up in the draft and have the opportunity to bring Ta ¬â¢Shia Phillips to Washington, ¬Â said Lacey. ¬ÅAt 6-6, she is one of the best rebounders in the game today while her agility and ability to score in the paint will help us out tremendously and give us an additional post player along with Crystal Langhorne, Nicky Anosike and Chasity Melvin. ¬Â
From Xavier University, Phillips has been one of the most dominant collegiate post players for the past four seasons. During her senior season, she averaged a double-double with 16.1 points and 12.4 rebounds per game and ranked second in double-doubles (22) amongst college players. Phillips was also third in the nation in field goal percentage, shooting 60% from the field. She finished her collegiate career averaging a double-double with 14.9 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Phillips was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, the All-Conference First Team and All-Defensive Team and capped the season by being named the Atlantic 10 Championship Most Outstanding Player.
¬ÅKelly is an experienced point guard who has excellent three point range, ¬Â stated Lacey. ¬ÅShe plays extremely hard and will be a defensive presence for us but also will add to the up-tempo game that we want to play. ¬Â
A 10-year WNBA veteran, the 5-10 Miller won a championship in 2007 as a member of the Phoenix Mercury while leading the team in assists (4.6). Last season, she helped guide the Atlanta Dream to the 2010 Eastern Conference Championships and WNBA Finals. Miller was drafted in 2001 and was named the 2004 Most Improved Player of the Year. She has averaged 7.2 points and 2.6 assists per game during her stellar career, with playoff averages of 7.3 points and 2.2 assists per game.
Harding was drafted (first overall) by the Phoenix Mercury before being drafted to Minnesota Lynx. In 2009, the Lynx traded Harding to the Mystics. She has averaged 11.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists during her WNBA career.
The Washington Mystics will tip off their 14th season on Saturday, June 4, on the road against the Connecticut Sun at 7:00 p.m. Washington ¬â¢s home opener at Verizon Center is Saturday, June 11, at 7:00 p.m. against the Chicago Sky.
