Texas Stars Foundation Raise Over $11,000 to Help Japan

April 11, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Texas Stars News Release

Cedar Park, TX - The Texas Stars Foundation and the Texas Stars hockey club announced on Monday that the team raised over $11,000 for Japanese earthquake aid. Funds were raised during the Stars last regular season home game against the Oklahoma City Barons on Saturday at Cedar Park Center.

"Hockey Helps Japan" produced over $11,000 with a silent auction that featured signed sticks from NHL superstars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, as well as a Boston Bruins team signed jersey. Francis Wathier's game worn All-Star jersey was the highest bid at over $1,300. Texas right wing Greg Rallo donated the stick used in Manitoba for his first career AHL hat trick on March 20th. He personalized the stick with an autograph prior to donating. A Texas Stars team signed helmet came in at $600. The Texas Stars Foundation also "passed the hat" for donations throughout the game. The Stars partnered with UNICEF to ensure 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the children of Japan.

"We are in a great community willing to reach out and help those in times of crisis," said Texas Stars President Rick McLaughlin. "We thank our fans and UNICEF for helping us raise money for the people of Japan."

Texas Stars right wing Raymond Sawada led the players in their charitable charge. Sawada's father Jack Sawada was born in Japan. The second-year Texas forward still has family members that reside in Kyoto, Japan. Sawada is one of the only professional hockey players in North America that is of Japanese descent.

"I speak on behalf of the players in thanking our great fans for their generosity", said Sawada. "I am also thankful for my friends in the hockey world who donated items for the auction. The money will be put to good use and should help the people of Japan."

UNICEF works in over 190 countries to prevent disease, provide sustainable environments, and alleviate the difficulty of emergencies for children throughout the world.

The Texas Stars begin the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs on Thursday against the Milwaukee Admirals. Texas finished the regular season as the four seed in the West Division and Milwaukee claimed the one seed by winning the division. The Stars went 5-1-0-0 against the Admirals this season, including a 3-0 mark on the road.
