Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Rapid City Rush completed a weekend sweep of the Arizona Sundogs on Saturday night, earning a 4-2 win at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. With the victory, the Rush extend their winning streak to a league and franchise best ten games and also retain the top spot in the Turner Conference. Andrew Smale and David Simoes garnered two points while goaltender Tim Boron made 24 saves to remain a perfect 7-0.
On a powerplay midway through the first period, Ryan Menei buried his league-leading 32nd goal of the season to open the scoring. Menei's tally, assisted by Scott Wray, set a new Rush single-season record for goals, eclipsing Wray's mark from a year ago.
Rapid City doubled the lead 2:05 into the middle period on Andrew Smale's second goal of the season. Accepting a pass from David Simoes, Smale entered the offensive zone on the left-wing side, sidestepping a Sundog defender before moving past goaltender Doug Groenestege. With just over 1:30 left in the period, Jamie Carroll banked a shot off of the goaltender and in to give the Rush a 3-0 lead after forty minutes.
The Sundogs finally got on the board at the 3:23 mark of the third period when Jamie VanderVeeken snapped home his 5th goal of the season, cutting the lead to two. The Rush bounced back less than three minutes later when David Simoes slammed home his first goal in a Rush uniform. Craig Macdonald tallied the game's final goal while on a two-man advantage, capitalizing on a back-door pass from Jason Visser.
The Rush have won ten straight games and eleven of the last twelve and remain atop the Turner Conference.
